Know you weren't talking about the UFX, but though Id mention it. I've never been fully satisfied by an interface, hopefully this could be the one. I've got the BPro on order, I'll be posting my thoughts on it here.
He said I wouldn't get any performance difference. I record guitar one track at a time, similar to yourself or with a Vox Tonelab or amplitude. I was also concerned whether USB2 would be as stable as firewire. I was told to not expect any difference in sound quality.
Just today I emailed RME to ask about the Babyface Pro versus UFX. With your older i7 system the MOTU stuff should be fine. They are the closest thing in latency, sound and features to the RME "when they work". So we have not been recommending them at all recommending them at all. This has been the case with their older Mk3 Hybrid interfaces as well They don't seem to be doing much to fix it. Yes the new MOTU AVB stuff does sound very good but so far has been way to unpredictable on newer hardware when it comes to USB 3.0 port compatibility. I could NOT do that with the Delta PCI card for some odd reason even though it measured slightly better in terms of RTL. In fact I can even go to 128 samples and still hear none. I am EXTREMELY sensetive to latency with VSTi and I hear none with the AVB.
Honestly having gone back to MasterTracks Pro and so forth I am quite familiar with MOTU and I never thought I would be using a MOTU with a PC as their strength has always been with the MAC, but here I am.
I'm a naysayer with hearing "big differences" in converters, at least I used to be because I can clearly hear a difference, even with these 55 year old ears, between the MOTU and my previous Delta 1010 / 66 combo.
Jim Rosenberry at Studiocat got similar results from his DAW.
I can play Ivory American D balls out, all options on 1000 voices with not a click or pop and this is on an aging i7 950 3.4GHZ 16G memory and WD Black 7200 drives under Windows 10. This is at 64 samples and the lowest buffer the AVB control panel offers. I just picked up the MOTU Ultralite AVB and I'm getting 2.4ms / 2.4ms reported byt Reaper and Studio One V3.1 and a little over 5 and change msec with Oblique. Unless you are talking about a used Fireface UC. So not really sure where you are getting them being close I price. The Fireface UCX is $850 more than the Babyface Pro. The Fireface UC is $650 more than the Babyface Pro. They have higher power requirements because of the increased circuitry. The Fireface UC or UCX are not buss power when using USB because there is no enough power over USB available for them. The Babyface Pro is totally bus powered which adds a lot cost to the design. Besides having more physical I/O it also has a bit more DSP power for the added I/O. it also using newer ADDA and pre amp designs and on paper is slightly better than the Babyface pro in some areas. The Fireface UCX is a more logical comparison. it also have DSP available unlike the old Fireface UC which was only offered the mixing/routing options. The Babyface Pro uses more current ADDA and pre amp technology so has better specs, i.e. The old Fireface UC is the USB version of the Fireface 500 from a few years ago. Is it better than FF UC? I can get more i/o from UC, even if I don't need it, but who knows, just in case, maybe I'll need more i/o someday. Better preamps, better dynamic range, you name it. The BB Pro looks great, and the upgraded components are good. I'm kind of confused and the prices are quite close.
